Social media is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. It is also a great tool for attackers to steal personal information about you. Below are five ways to increase your chance of not having your identity stolen.
Password
Use a strong password or passphrase with two-factor authentication. The longer the password, the better! Use a different password for each of your accounts, and for bonus points use a password manager to generate and store them.
Be selective with requests
If you don’t know the person, don’t accept their request. This could be a fake account which unnecessarily exposes you to attack.
Check your post before you submit it
Be careful with what you share. It is important not to reveal sensitive personal information ie: home address, financial information, phone number, or as in the article below, your boarding pass. The more you post, the easier it is to have your identity stolen.
Click links with caution
Social media accounts are regularly hacked. Look out for language or content that does not sound like something your friend would post.
Secure your device
Multiple apps should require a password to protect your device and if you are using a shared device, remember to log off when you are done.
